Our free Online Timer combines a countdown timer and stopwatch in one tool. Whether you need a countdown timer to track deadlines and time limits, or a stopwatch to measure elapsed time, this versatile online timer has you covered. The Online Timer features a clean, distraction-free interface that works perfectly on all devices. Use this online timer for studying, teaching, cooking, exercising, presentations, or any activity where accurate time tracking matters. With customizable countdown timer and stopwatch display options, fullscreen mode, and the ability to keep your screen awake, this Online Timer is designed to meet all your timing needs while maintaining simplicity and ease of use.

Online Countdown Timer

The Countdown Timer mode lets you set a specific duration and counts down to zero, perfect for timed activities, exams, cooking, and task management. What makes our countdown timer unique is its ability to continue counting past zero into negative numbers, showing you exactly how much overtime has elapsed. This feature is invaluable for teachers tracking exam extensions, professionals managing flexible deadlines, or anyone who needs to know not just when time is up, but how much extra time has passed. Simply set your desired hours, minutes, and seconds, press start, and watch the countdown timer display the remaining time with crystal-clear visibility.

Online Stopwatch

The Stopwatch mode measures elapsed time with precision, ideal for tracking study sessions, work intervals, exercise duration, and project time logging. Our stopwatch offers an optional millisecond display that can be toggled on or off depending on your needs. For activities like tracking study time or work sessions where you only need hours, minutes, and seconds, you can hide the milliseconds for a cleaner, more focused display. The stopwatch also includes a split time feature, allowing you to record intermediate times without stopping the main timer. This is perfect for tracking multiple rounds, laps, or segments within a longer timing session, giving you detailed records of your time management.

Use Cases

  • Classroom Teaching: Teachers can use the countdown timer to manage exam time, control activity durations, and keep class exercises on schedule. The countdown timer's overtime feature helps track extra time given to students, while the large online timer display ensures visibility from anywhere in the classroom.
  • Study Time Tracking: Students can use the stopwatch to track study sessions using techniques like Pomodoro or time blocking. The stopwatch allows you to hide milliseconds for a distraction-free display that shows just hours, minutes, and seconds. Record split times with the stopwatch to log different subjects or tasks within your study session.
  • Time Management: Use the countdown timer for meetings, presentations, or timed work sprints. For detailed time tracking across different projects, our Digital Clock provides a clean display of current time alongside your online timer.

How to Use

Getting Started: Click the settings icon to choose between Countdown Timer or Stopwatch mode. The Online Timer saves your preference, so you only need to select your mode once unless you want to switch between countdown timer and stopwatch functionality.

Using Countdown Mode: In countdown timer mode, set your desired time using the time input fields for hours, minutes, and seconds. You can manually enter the time or use the increment/decrement buttons. Once set, start the countdown timer by clicking the play icon. The countdown timer will count down to 00:00:00, and then uniquely continue into negative numbers (for example, -00:01:23) to show exactly how much overtime has elapsed. This is perfect for tracking extensions or knowing precisely how much extra time has passed. Pause the countdown timer temporarily using the pause control, and reset to return to your original set time using the reset icon.

Using Stopwatch Mode: In stopwatch mode, simply start the stopwatch by clicking the play icon to begin measuring elapsed time from zero. The stopwatch counts upward, showing hours, minutes, seconds, and optionally milliseconds. To toggle millisecond display on or off, use the settings panel. When the stopwatch is running, you can record split times by clicking the split icon without stopping the main stopwatch timer. Each split time is recorded and displayed below the main stopwatch display, perfect for tracking laps, rounds, or different task segments. Pause the stopwatch temporarily using the pause control, and reset the stopwatch to zero using the reset icon to clear all split records.

Additional Features: Use the fullscreen icon to maximize the Online Timer display, making it easier to see from across a room or during presentations. Enable the Keep Screen Awake feature to prevent your device from sleeping during long countdown timer or stopwatch sessions. On mobile devices, the Online Timer interface adapts for touch controls and remains visible even when your phone would normally dim or lock.

FAQ

Can the countdown timer continue past zero?

Yes! In countdown timer mode, the online timer will continue counting in negative numbers to show how much time has elapsed past zero. For example, after the countdown timer reaches 00:00:00, it will display -00:00:01, -00:00:02, and so on. This unique countdown timer feature helps you track overtime precisely, which is especially useful for teachers giving extra exam time, flexible deadline management, or any situation where you need to know exactly how much time has passed after the initial countdown ended.

How accurate is the online timer?

The Online Timer is accurate to milliseconds. In stopwatch mode, you can enable millisecond display for maximum precision. Both the countdown timer and stopwatch use JavaScript's high-resolution timing APIs to ensure consistent and accurate time tracking. While the online timer display updates every frame, the underlying timing mechanism maintains millisecond precision throughout your countdown timer or stopwatch session.

Can I hide milliseconds in stopwatch mode?

Yes! In stopwatch mode, you can toggle the millisecond display on or off through the settings panel. This is particularly useful when you're tracking longer durations like study sessions or work intervals, where you only need to see hours, minutes, and seconds. Hiding milliseconds provides a cleaner, less distracting display while still maintaining accurate timing in the background.

How do I use split times?

Split times are available in stopwatch mode. While the stopwatch is running, click the split icon to record the current time without stopping the main stopwatch timer. Each split time is recorded with a number and timestamp, displayed in a list below the main stopwatch display. This feature is perfect for tracking laps during exercise, recording time spent on different tasks within a study session, or measuring multiple rounds or segments in any activity. Reset the stopwatch using the reset icon to clear all split records and start fresh.

Does the online timer work offline?

Yes, once the page is loaded, the Online Timer works completely offline without requiring an internet connection. Both the countdown timer and stopwatch run using your device's local processing power and system clock, so you can use the online timer anywhere, anytime, even without internet access. However, you need to load the Online Timer page initially while online.

Can I use the online timer on mobile devices?

Absolutely! The Online Timer is fully responsive and optimized for mobile devices including smartphones and tablets. Both the countdown timer and stopwatch interface adapt to smaller screens with touch-friendly controls. You can enable the Keep Screen Awake feature to prevent your phone from sleeping during countdown timer or stopwatch sessions. The Online Timer works perfectly in mobile browsers without requiring any app installation.
